Joseph L. “Joel” Steele, 67, of White Hall, AR peacefully went to be with his Lord on Monday, May 3, 2021 with his loving family by his side.

Born October 27, 1953 in Pine Bluff, he was the son of the late Frank A. Steele, Jr. and Lula Faye (Waller) Steele. He received his early education at the Annunciation Academy of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, and graduated from Pine Bluff High School. Graduating with honors, he received his undergraduate degree in accounting from the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff, and obtained his master’s degree in Business and Finance from Webster University in Little Rock.

As a teenager, he worked for Kroger and Weingarten’s, and spent over 15 years working for Safeway. A lover of numbers, he was an accountant at Riceland Foods, later retiring as Director of Materials Management at Jefferson Regional Medical Center.

Back in the day, Joel was known for competitive drag racing. He and his “old school buddies” Stan, Rick, and Bryan spent many sleepless nights making modifications to his candy apple red Chevy Nova so he could easily cross the finish line leaving others in the dust. The grin on his face as he reached out to take his opponent’s one-hundred-dollar bill said it all. His determination to win was the driving force behind every endeavor he pursued.

From drag racing to tickling the ivories, he was a gifted pianist who could play the most beautiful classical piano pieces on his grandmother’s baby grand piano that resides in his home today. An avid Razorback fan, he enjoyed watching every sport the Razorbacks played, and proudly called the Hogs at games with his brothers Frank and Billy, and he passed this tradition onto his equally passionate “Hog Calling” Son, Nick. With encouragement from Nick and his grandson Will, he later learned to fish at the lake on the farm in Sheridan, and proudly held up his catch even though Will helped him take it off the hook.

Prior to his illnesses, he loved spending time in his garden. Many summers, you’d find him on the farm at Sheridan growing jubilee watermelons, celebrity tomatoes or Dill’s Atlantic Giant Pumpkins. As a master gardener, he won 17 blue ribbons for his outstanding pumpkins at the Jefferson County Fair in 2004. Later on, he discovered a love for growing beautiful roses, and enjoyed giving them away to others.

Joel was a family man, and loved spending time with them, especially, his grandson Will, and his brother, Billy. He was a very generous and giving man with a big heart who doted on his precious little chihuahua, “Tiny” who upon her death, he desperately searched, but could never quite find a replacement. He had unconditional love for his two sons, Brian and Nick, and lovingly devoted his life to attending to the physical needs of his older son, Brian who God had determined Joel to be his dad.

He was preceded in death by his brother, Frank A. Steele, III, and his brother-in-law, William Lisenbey with whom he shared a close bond.

To cherish his memory is Kay, the love of his life for 44 years, who he first met when they were childhood friends living on Olive Street; his sons, Joseph Brian Steele of the home, and Nicholas Lee Steele (Whitney) of Benton, AR; his brother, William “Billy” Steele of Benton, AR; and his grandson, William Nicholas “Will” Steele.

A Memorial Service celebrating his life will be held Monday, May 10th at 2:00 at St. Joseph Catholic Church with Father Joseph P. Marconi officiating.

The family of Joel would like to thank the doctors and nurses at JRMC Intensive Care Unit for their tireless efforts in doing everything possible in helping save his life. We are grateful to the medical staff at Cornerstone Specialty Hospital in Little Rock for making good on their promise to wean him from his ventilator, and keeping him alive long enough for us to have daily visits with him, and the chance to tell him how much we dearly loved him. His son, Nick is forever thankful to his dad’s brother, Billy and their cousin, Denise Cagle Willis, who he called Cissy, for their loving care and compassion they provided him during his lengthy hospital stay.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Jenkins Memorial Children’s Center in Pine Bluff, AR.
