John Irving “Sonny” Arledge, Jr., 87, of Wabbaseka, Arkansas, passed away Saturday, September 12, 2020, at his home.
Mr. Arledge was born September 25, 1932, in Pine Bluff, Arkansas, a son of the late John Irving and Marion Williams Arledge. He attended Gabe Meyer Elementary School in Pine Bluff until the age of 9, then moved to Wabbaseka, where he graduated from Willie K. Hocker High School. After graduating from high school, he went to work for Jesse Bogy as a farmhand. He then managed W.W. West Store Mercantile in Wabbaseka. He was appointed Postmaster of Wabbaseka by President Lyndon B. Johnson, November 30, 1967. He was one of the last Postmasters to be appointed by a president. He was a Postmaster for 30 years while doing so he received numerous appreciation and service awards. Mr. Arledge also operated Sonny’s Television and Appliance Service for over 50 years.
He was a member of Wabbaseka United Methodist Church and Ruritan Civic Organization.
He was loved by his community and always willing to help those in need.
He is survived by his loving wife of 67 years, Faye Baugus Arledge, whom he married August 1, 1953 in Tacoma, Washington; son, Wayne (EC) Arledge of Wabbaseka; daughter, Dianna (Ed) Cloinger of Vilonia, Arkansas; grandson, Clint (Rochelle) Cloinger of Conway, Arkansas; three great-grandchildren, Cody, Jayden, and Colton Cloinger; four brothers, Gerald Robert Arledge of Pine Bluff; Billy Dale (Elouise) Arledge of Wabbaseka, Charles Bond (Jackie) Arledge of Bella Vista, Arkansas, and Dwayne (Debra) Arledge of Allen, Texas; three sisters, Lanelle (Claude) Bost of White Hall, Arkansas, Carol Ann (Rick) Giddons of Flower Mound, Texas; and Marilyn Bubbus of Bryant, Arkansas.
Mr. Arledge was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Richard Arledge and James F. Arledge; and two sisters, Shirley McGinnis and Jayne Camp.
Graveside services will be Wednesday, September 16, 2020, 11:00 AM, at Flat Bayou Cemetery with Reverend Ferrel West officiating. There will be a visitation at the cemetery from 10:30 AM to service time.
