Obituary

Howard Ray Guffey, Sr., 81, of Rison, died Saturday, September 19, 2020.

He was born January 31, 1939 in Bell City, Missouri, son of Melvin Guffey and Mazie Rogers Guffey.

Mr. Guffey was reared and received his early education in Woodlawn, graduating from Woodlawn High School.

He worked for International Paper for 45 years, retiring as a chemical furnace operator.

Mr. Guffey was a member of Pleasant Ridge Missionary Baptist Church. He enjoyed the outdoors, including hunting, fishing and riding his tractor. Mr. Guffey also loved spending time with his grandchildren, whether it was at ballgames, other events or just hanging out at the house or around nature.

Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Emma Kathryn Miller Guffey, whom he married June 4, 1957 in Greenville, Mississippi; three brothers, Adam Burchett, Paul Davis and J.M. Guffey; and a sister, Eva Lou Guffey.

Survivors include his daughter, Cynthia Conner and her husband, Chris, of Pine Bluff; two sons, Anthony Brian Guffey and his wife, Paula, of Woodlawn and Howard Ray Guffey, Jr. of Woodlawn; brother, David Guffey; sister, Joyce Rhodes; four grandchildren, Cassidy Meyer, Aron Meyer, Zachary Meyer and Ashley Owens; and 13 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m., Thursday, September 24, 2020 in the Chapel of Ralph Robinson and Son with Brother Josh Blevins officiating. Interment will follow in Roselawn Cemetery. Visitation will be Thursday morning from 9:30 a.m. until service time at Robinson’s. All state covid-19 guidelines will be observed.

I worked many years with Mr. Guffey at I.P. He was a wonderful man and taught me alot about work ethic. Prayers for his family during this difficult time.

Howard Ray, Cynthia, and Brian, I am so sorry for your loss. Uncle Howard was a very sweet man and always took time to talk to me when I would see him, even if he was busy shopping in Wal-Mart! He was very special to me and a wonderful uncle. Love, Donna Burchett Herrin
