Don Spharler, 86, of Pine Bluff, passed away peacefully at his home Wednesday, May 19, 2021.

He was an insurance agent with First Arkansas Insurance up until his death and a lifelong resident of Pine Bluff. He was born September 19, 1934 and was preceded in death by his parents, JD and Ruth Spharler; brother, Norman Spharler; and wife, Phoebe Spharler.

Survivors include his three daughters, Kathy Crowder, Michele Byrd and Karen Majors; his two children through marriage, Lyle Lovelace and Allyn Dixon; 9 grandchildren, Jared Langston, Jenica Clement, Mandy Robertson, Katie Peek, Luke Crowder, Kristy Groves, Joel Anderson, Rachel Majors and Lauren Majors; and 16 great-grandchildren.

Don graduated from Pine Bluff High School in 1952 and immediately went to work as an insurance clerk with McNew Insurance Agency. He was one of the youngest agents to ever receive the Allan Kennedy award from the Arkansas Association of Insurance and went on to serve as President of the Association. When McNew was bought by First Arkansas Insurance in 1989, Don continued to serve his customers proudly at First Arkansas for nearly 32 years. Until covid he prided himself on never missing a convention. Don served the community he so loved by teaching insurance courses, serving on AAIA Technical Affairs committee and later the Board of Directors, delegate to the IIAA’s National Legislative Conference, president of the Pine Bluff Insurance Exchange, secretary and board member for the United Fund of Jefferson County, board of directors Pine Bluff Chamber of Commerce and many more committees/boards on the local, state and national front. He loved what he did and was very proud to have many customers for over 50 years. He was in it for his customers and loved serving and working out issues for them. He was inducted in the Arkansas Insurance Hall of Fame in 2016.

Don loved his family and worked tirelessly to help all. He enjoyed working outdoors-most recently clearing lots, planting trees and improving his own yard while keeping every bird and squirrel fed in the neighborhood. As if working every day on his customers insurance needs wasn’t enough he was building a spec house and planning other building projects with his grandson. Over the years he put in two subdivisions in White Hall and built houses in them. He was the perfect role model for his children on how you should live your life through hard work, treat your customers and give back to your community.

Visitation is scheduled for Sunday May 23, 2021 from 2-4 p.m. at Ralph Robinson and Son Funeral Directors. A graveside service will be 2:00 p.m., Monday, May 24, 2021 at Memorial Park Cemetery with Brother Matt Mosler officiating.

I was saddened to see the death of Don, he was one of my favorite people when I worked for The St. Paul and I was his underwriter. Don and I wrote a lot of business and I enjoyed 'spar'ing with him. I was not aware of what all he accomplished in his lifetime and I know his family will miss him so much. Annette Rickard

My thoughts and prayers are with the Spharler family. Mr. Don was a wonderful friend to my husband Darrell, they would talk every morning, meet for lunch with friends and just visits. He always spoke of his wonderful family that he loved so very much. He was so heart broken when Darrell passed, he would call and text checking on me. He will be truly missed by me and so many. Mr. Don was family to us. Sandy Anderson
