Obituary

Bettye Leibenguth, 93, of Pine Bluff, died at home on Saturday November 7, 2020.

Born in Memphis on March 23, 1927, to William Ross and Mary Thomas Fry, she grew up there with her younger sister, Martha, surrounded by aunts, uncles and cousins from both the Thomas and Fry families with whom her parents always remained close.

Married at a young age to Elwin Edison Dorris, the couple moved first to Searcy and then to Pine Bluff, where they raised their two children. In Pine Bluff she was a loan officer for Guaranty Federal Savings and Loan and later for South Arkansas Savings and Loan. She enjoyed her career and the friends and acquaintances she made through her work. Bettye and Ed eventually divorced, but she remained in Pine Bluff for the rest of her life.

In the early 1970’s Bettye married Don Monroe Leibenguth. They were members of First Presbyterian Church and volunteered for CASA. She achieved her Life Master designation in bridge, and together Bettye and Don led and active life of bridge, music and casual entertaining at their condominium on Lake Hamilton in Hot Springs.

Don died in November of 2001, and in early 2002 Bettye’s son, Skipper died. For the next fifteen years she remained active as she traveled and continued to play bridge. In 2018 Bettye’s health forced her to slow down and limit her activities.

The last year of her life was spent in the loving care of her companion and compassionate caregiver, Beatrice Mayzes, who tirelessly devoted her time and effort toward making Bettye comfortable, healthy and happy.

She is survived by her daughter, Jan and her husband, Bill Kientz of Jackson, Mississippi; her granddaughter, Julia and her husband Robert Ambersley and their son, Gus of Southern Pines, North Carolina; and her sister Martha Fields and her son Garret both of Memphis.
There will be a private memorial service for the family, with committal in Graceland Cemetery under the direction of Ralph Robinson & Son.

Memorials may be made to the Jefferson County Humane Society, PO Box 2233, Pine Bluff, AR 71613.

Betty was a friend and bridge partner of my Mother, Joan Buckner. I am sure they are dealing the cards once again.

Jan and family,
So many memories of your mom flashed through my mind as I read her obituary. Sounds like she had a very active life up until a year ago. That is quite a blessing. You are in my thoughts and pray that your very special memories of your mom, grandmother and sister will give you comfort in the days ahead. Love you, dear friend.
